About La Paz
La Paz, officially Our Lady of La Paz and also known in Aymara as Chuqi Yapu, is the seat of government and the de facto capital of Bolivia, while Sucre remains the constitutional capital. Founded on 20 October 1548 by Spanish captain Alonso de Mendoza on the site of the former Inca settlement of Laja, the city lies in the central western part of the country, about 68 km southeast of Lake Titicaca, nestled in a deep canyon created by the Choqueyapu River and at an altitude that ranges between 10 650 and 13 250 feet (3 250 – 4 100 m) above sea level, making it one of the highest capitals in the world. With a population of ≈ 755 000 inhabitants (2024) and a metropolitan area that exceeds ≈ 2.2 million inhabitants when combined with El Alto, La Paz is the third‑largest urban centre in Bolivia. The city blends a rich colonial legacy — such as the Church of San Francisco (1549) and the Witch Market — with modern transport systems, among which the cable cars stand out, linking the central zone with the elevated neighbourhoods of the mountain range and easing mobility in a terrain of steep slopes. Moreover, La Paz concentrates most of the country’s political, administrative and economic activity, generating around 25 % of Bolivia’s GDP and hosting numerous embassies, universities (Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, Universidad Católica Boliviana) and museums (National Museum of Art, Museum of Ethnography and Folklore). Its mountain climate is cool and dry, with daytime temperatures around 15‑20 °C and nights that can drop to 5 °C, so layered clothing is recommended to adapt to thermal variability. Overall, La Paz represents the political and cultural heart of Bolivia, offering a unique mix of history, architecture, mountainous scenery and vibrant urban life.

➔ Tour to the Cholets of El Alto City: Visit the city of El Alto, a young, chaotic and striking city, the fastest‑growing alongside Santa Cruz. It has a majority population of Aymara migrants, who seek “Amautas” (fortune readers) to learn about their future and express their culture through “Cohetillo Architecture”, an original Andean architectural style of El Alto, where the houses that host local parties (commonly called “Cholets”) have a completely different design from the usual; designs inspired by pop‑culture icons such as “Mickey Mouse”, “Star Wars”, “Transformers” are a clear sign of this population’s strong desire to open up to a global culture while preserving the essence of its history.
