Travel information to visit Los Yungas
About Coroico, Los Yungas
Coroico, situated at approximately 1,650 m above sea level in the heart of the Yungas of La Paz, has ≈ 23,000 inhabitants and has become the main tourist hub of the area. The population is predominantly Aymara-mestizo, and the origin of the town dates back to the pre-Columbian era: it was founded by Aymara communities, as were the neighboring Chulumani, Coripata, and Irupana, which also emerged as indigenous settlements in the Yungas valley. Although most of the original buildings disappeared during the colonial expansion, remains of colonial and republican architecture can still be appreciated in some houses and in the parish church of the central square, where adobe walls, carved wooden balconies, and neoclassical-style details are combined. The charm of Coroico lies in its subtropical-temperate climate, its lush quina forests and coffee plantations, and the offer of ecotourism activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and visits to waterfalls like La Escondida; all of this has boosted an economy based on boutique accommodations, Andean-fusion cuisine restaurants, and local guides who promote Aymara culture. Thus, Coroico combines its historical legacy with infrastructure oriented toward sustainable tourism, keeping alive the heritage of its Aymara founders while welcoming travelers seeking nature, history, and authenticity.
