Extent: It has an area of 1,523,446 ha. (15 234 km2)

 

Location: The Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is located in the northeast of the Department of Santa Cruz, in the province Velasco, and a small portion east of Beni. Has a location bordering with Brazil, occupies the most important mountainous region system of the Precambrian shield, characterized by high plateaus and stunning cliffs. The hydrography is defined by rivers Paraguá Iténez east and west. The major basins within the area belong to Pauserna and Green rivers, tributaries of Iténez or Guaporé.

 

Biogeographic subregions, altitudinal and weather: Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is located in biogeographic subregions of Madeira rainforest and savanna closed field. The altitude varies between 100 and 980 meters above sea level and is warm and humid.

 

Vegetation and flora: In the Noel Kempff are 2700 species of higher plants recorded and estimated that there may be about 4000 species, several species of orchids, bromeliads, Passiflora, heliconias, aroids and palms. They are also economically important species such as mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla, cedar (Cederla odorata), Paquió, serebó and rubber (Hevea brasiliensis). Oak (Amburana caearensis), several species of palms as açaí (Euterpe precatoria) motacusillo (Maximiliana maripa) pachiuva (Socratea exorr-hiza), royal palm (Mauritia flexuosa). Especially highlights a remarkable diversity of orchid species and plant communities.

 

Fauna: As for mammals, so far has been recorded 139 species of mammals such as jaguars, pumas, tapirs, peccaries troop or peccaries, monkeys, urinas, capiguaras and rare species such as the mountain puppy, borochi doe deer swamps, dolphins, londras among others. Regarding birds have been recorded 621 species (21% of the birds of South America) the most common are the macaws, parrots, toucans, hawks, falcons, partridges, ducks, herons, kingfishers and others, are also endemic birds such as the Sporophila nigrorufa, outstanding rare birds like the harpy eagle, piyo or rhea. The Noel Kempff recorded 74 species of reptiles including alligators, lizards, turtles and snakes, black alligator excel, sicurí, tataruga, tracayá, peta ground. It has 62 species of amphibians (frogs and toads).

 

Local population: There are no people inside the park. In the area of influence there is Guarayo a traditional indigenous comunity, and across the river there are Brazilian populations of farmers and traders.

 

Tourism: Occupies the most important region of mountainous system characterized by high plateaus and stunning cliffs, so it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is home to a great diversity of ecosystems, some that stand out for their uniqueness in Bolivia and their conservation status; Noel Kempff Park will present an exceptional scenic beauty by large cliffs and waterfalls Caparú Plateau, unique training Precambrian Shield in the area. In the north there is the camp Golden Flower strategic place to start walking to allow cataracts admire Ahlfeld and Arco Iris. We begin our trip to camp Ahlfeld to board a boat for five people walking the river and Paucerna Iténez, you may occasionally see jaguars  drinking water from the Iténez river, walk at the foot of the waterfall Ahlfeld to appreciate the beauty of this unique training . The Rainbow Falls is a true spectacle of nature, this waterfall is 88 meters high and is formed with Paucerna river, they fall into Caparuch Plateau.

How to get to Noel Kempff Mercado Park: All access is from the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, it is advisable then to San Ignacio de Velasco, following the route: Santa Cruz - San Ramon - Concepcion - San Ignacio.  San Ignacio can be reached by bus, but to enter the park is only possible with private 4wd car. After San Ignacio the road continues to Los Fierros and Camp Golden Flower, is also possible to hire planes from Santa Cruz to get to the park, the flight lasts for three hours, is a fascinating experience initially fly over towns  of Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos and then the impressive plateau Caparú and Rainbow falls and Ahlfeld.
